The dwindling numbers of “Christians” who believe the Gospel

A new survey has shocked many in religious circles, apparently there are almost 40% of people who describe themselves as “Christian” but who live a totally secular lifestyle. These “believers” attend no church services and say they have very little if any connection at all to religion. What is behind this growing trend of churchless-ness? The dwindling numbers of people who actually follow any of the doctrine of Christianity has many very surprised.

Religion researcher David Kinnaman who did the survey expected to find the typical 20% of people who had no religious connection but what he found was that almost 40% of people surveyed in the United States describe themselves as not apart of any religion at all, what is amazing is that most of these people say that when asked they usually state that they are Christian.

 How to understand the trend

To understand the trend we have to see that millions of people doubt the beliefs of Christianity and are instead labeling themselves “Christian” by tradition. These people may put up a Christmas tree or attend an Easter service but their beliefs are from tradition not faith. What is behind the growing secularism in the United States? While Christians are being tortured in many parts of the world the West is losing the faith.  In Europe Christianity is mainly a tradition, a belief in God is not a reality in the lives of Europeans, this is spreads in the USA. I have lived in Europe for many years and any admission to believe in God is often met by cynicism or even anger.

How much did the American mega TV ministers who have pumped a gospel of “getting rich” play a part in the lack of faith in the Americans? A gospel based on money has made a lot of American Ministers rich, yet they will have to give an account for every dollar they extracted from the flock.  The original gospel of Jesus Christ has been reduced to slick hair Americans speaking on behalf of the Middle East born Messiah.  If these men truly feared God they would never put their faces on TV but they have no fear of God. The pollution of the American pulpit by those who call themselves minister may be playing a part in the dwindling numbers of Americans who are turned off to religion.

Christian Depression is real.

Christian depression, genocide and money ministers

Sadly, Christianity is a shadow of what it once was in the United States, Christian depression is on the rise all over the world but you would never know it if you watched the television ministers. In the minds of these ministers life is a continual party of blessing. Once American Christianity became a “television show” where anyone with nice teeth was allowed in the pulpit the lure of big money replaced the gospel.

It may come as a surprise to those who profess to be followers of Christ in the United States but the faithful in the Middle East are experiencing bombing, torture and loss of life for Christ in parts of the Middle East.  In an amazing article in the Columbus dispatch it was stated that “Christianity is all but ended in the Middle East”.  What has happened to the believers is nothing short of genocide, from 3 million people down to 300,000 and shrinking fast. Those interviewed said they will not go back.

There are Christians today who are unsure of where they are going to live or even what they will eat, this is also true in the United States.  Christian depression is real but you would be very hard pressed to find any ministers speaking about this in the pulpit; the typical American message is about blessings. The typical message from too many of our ministers is how to bend God’s arm for a better job or maybe a newer car.

Christianity in the United States does not resemble anything of the original gospel.

What happened to this humble religion which started with a few scared men hiding in an upper room after the crucifixion of their leader?  Christian depression is real, it lives in the hearts of the single mothers dragging their little ones to church, and it lives in the homeless man sitting in the back of the church begging God for repentance. The television has ruined the religion, the pimping of the flock with messages of getting rich is nothing short of blasphemy. The depressed and hurting are left to fend for themselves in American Christianity.

Why not stop right now, not later, and send a prayer to those who had their churches destroyed in the Middle East?

Many are now homeless; it may be the prayer God has been waiting to hear from you.

Help for a Depressed Christian

It is a fact that there are many depressed Christians who are in the battle of their lives, we recently received an email from a single mother who is at the end of her rope, she has 2 teenage boys who are hanging out with the wrong crowd who have absolutely no intentions of living the spiritual life.  She is handling a lot of financial pressure and is seeking help, but help for a depressed Christian is not so easily found.

There are so many churches which are not meeting the needs of the worshiper; there is one very large congregation that a friend spoke of where a meeting with the pastor is close to impossible, the people are often direct to speak with a bishop or an elder. This is not to say that a pastor has an answer any better than an elder or another person in the church but when you cannot meet with the Pastor it is not a good sign. The point of the matter is that there exist many who love God but are not finding help for their depressed condition. Each situation is different, depression can last a very long time or it can be a sudden event that triggers the crisis; the bottom line is that depression hurts and we need something to lift us from our pit.

In the case of the Mother with the teen boys this is sadly a common situation today, women carrying the burden of bread winner and father of the house. There are so many women who are suffering form depression it is almost an epidemic, in a study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), women are 70 percent more likely to suffer from depression than men during the course of their lifetimes.

I am frequently in churches and it is often a very sad scene to behold, 80% of the congregations usually consist of women, often these women travel alone at night to attend service. The men are absent. Raising 2 boys who are more interested in ungodly things that concern teenagers is not easy on a single mother. Help for a depressed Christian is not as easily found as one would think.  To the depressed, Never give up.
