There are many who are seeking help for Christian depression, but few are really finding a solution, far too many people are unaware that religious people also suffer deep dark depressive mood. It is common to turn on a religious station and find some minister speaking about sadness without the slightest idea about what a depressive mood truly does to a person. True help for Christian Depression is very hard to find.
According to the world health organization there are over
150 million people who are on antidepressants,
a large percent of these people would consider themselves Jewish or a follower
of Christianity, the problem is that few of these believers ever get a true
spiritual answer as to how to deal with depression. The religious leaders are
lacking in the qualifications to deal with real depression.
Caught in the middle
It is clear that the religious person who seeks help from
the non-religious world feels as if something is missing; often hey discover that
the non-religious person is missing that necessary spiritual advice when trying
to help a religious person with a depressed mood. There is another dilemma, when
the righteous seeks help for sadness, loneliness or a long time depressive mood
from another religious person they are often met with snappy bible phrases
which sound good but do not truly address the problem.
The bottom line is
that real help for Christian depression is hard to come by. There are
increasing numbers of people who are simply not doing well, they are not having
the time of their lives; they are barely hanging on. A depressive mood can be all consuming and
become very difficult to overcome, it is at these times when quick bible quotes
from friend may not be enough.
New York Times writer TM Lerman
Wrote an amazing article from the Times about the rise in
depression in the world, she quotes a Christian Woman from India
who almost died from a suicide attempt
“I spoke with a young woman who, after a quarrel
with her parents, took enough pills to land her in intensive care, and to an
evangelical Christian who said that God had told him to give a sermon about
suicide. He said he asked God, “Is this even a topic to be spoken about?”
It is my
experience that most Ministers and Rabbis’ know very little about depression,
they often offer a quick standard answer but this is at most a bandaid on a leg
that is about to fall off.
